Club Chairman wins Volunteer of the Year award
This year's annual Tennis Wales awards took place in Cardiff on Saturday 27 January 2018 and Pen-y-ffordd Tennis Club had a finalist in the shape of our chairman, Nigel Edwards, who was one of two finalists in the running for the Volunteer of the Year award.

And the club had a winner as Nige was made this year's Volunteer of the Year!

Nige has been working for the benefit of the club since 2012, initially as Club Secretary and then as Chairman. He set up the club's first ever website, which he has updated and developed in the year's since, including the recent modernisation to make the site mobile friendly. He has also worked to promote the club by leveraging the benefits of social media, as well as more traditional methods such as banners, leaflets and negotiating with the council for installation of directional road signs.
This time period has seen the club move from an unsustainably low membership base to reach record numbers of members. Nige said, "I'm surprised but honoured to be the winner of this award. It's been great to see the club flourish once more, but it's the result of more than just my own efforts and this award should be shared amongst our small but dedicated management committee team. During the last five years we've also been lucky to have Mike Herd as our Lead Coach as Mike's engagement with the membership, particularly our up and coming younger players, has also contributed greatly to the upturn in the club's fortunes ."
